when you see something too cheap on craigslist/FB marketplace that the seller doesn’t know is actually kinda cool or #quirky (should I make a cars&bids version?)

Barber is for motorcyclists what the Vatican is for devout Catholics.

I’ve paid my respects a couple times, but not since the Vintage Festival was still new.

You could also change it too "that belongs on a trailer", the reaction of many people Harrison Ford's age when they see a nice car being driven and used for its intended purpose.

I went to his much smaller original museum and it was amazing. The curator even gave my step dad and I a backroom tour. T here were several hundred more motorcycles in various condition. Some were under restoration, other wa iting for their day to come.  I asked if it would be okay if I moved in, it was heaven.

Ten years later, I was able to go to this mega facility. Now the bulk of Mt. Barber’s collection can be seen. It i s an amazing facility. Once again I got the VIP treatment from the curator.  Truly magnificent.

It’s nuts. They run a peerless, world-class facility, and yet every employee & volunteer (most of the docents are volunteers, IIRC) I’ve interacted with* are humble & genuinely delighted that people love the place. My first visit was in late October, one of very few visitors that day, and I ended up wandering around the shop areas with one of the mechanics employed there, looking at recent acquisitions that weren’t quite ready for display.

The collection is so big, they only have about 1/3rd of it on display at any time, or that was the case when I was last there (‘09). A portion of it tends to be out on loan to places like the Peterson (or the Guggenheim locations, when The Art of The Motorcycle was happening).

*including George Barber himself. Absolute joy of a guy to talk with.

I believe the original museum had 200 or so motorcycles on display. I was told at that time, and saw, that there were 700 in the collection. I can only imagine how many more there are now.

There is more than motorcycles, for those that are interested in motorcycles (???) . His Lotus an d other vintage race cars collection is extensive, as is the vintage boat motors. Then there is the racing and swap meet events too.

I’ve done two of the G uggenheim Art of the Motorcycle shows, NYC and Vegas. Also fantastic.
